Black Queens risk losing coach Nora Häuptle to Zambia
Ghana’s Black Queens could face a significant setback as head coach Nora Häuptle is reportedly in advanced talks to become the head coach of Zambia’s Copper Queens. According to 3Sports, Häuptle is being lined up to replace Bruce Mwape, who is expected to be sacked following a decision by the Zambian Football Association’s Executive Committee.
Häuptle, who took over as head coach of Ghana’s women’s national team in 2023 after initially serving as a technical adviser, has been instrumental in reviving the Black Queens’ fortunes. She led the team to qualify for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time since 2018, earning praise for her tactical acumen and leadership.
However, Zambia is reportedly preparing to offer the 41-year-old Swiss coach a two-year contract after positive negotiations. The move comes as Zambia looks to strengthen its team after narrowly defeating Ghana 4-3 on aggregate in a two-legged tie to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
Häuptle had been linked to the Copper Queens earlier in 2024, and her potential departure could be a major blow to the Black Queens, who are preparing for a challenging campaign at the 2024 WAFCON. Ghana has been placed in Group C, alongside defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali.
Zambia’s decision to pursue Häuptle reflects their ambition to build on recent successes and solidify their standing in women’s football. Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association may need to act swiftly to retain Häuptle or secure a capable replacement to maintain the Black Queens’ momentum.
The situation remains fluid, and an official announcement is expected soon if talks between Häuptle and the Zambian FA are finalized.
